While choosing a CeBIT hotel, one would think that in a modern country like Germany, all hotels would have good quality standards. Unfortunately, this isn’t true. I have paid CeBIT prices for really horrible hotels. Their staff was rude and didn’t speak any English, rooms were filthy, the internet connection was really poor, (and only available sometimes near the reception). My friends have asked me, “Didn’t you check the hotel out on Tripadvisor before you booked?”. I answer them, “yes, but that’s all I had.” The main reason was, I booked late. “Late” means January or February. If you really want to visit Hannover for the CeBIT show, and wait to long to book your hotel, you take what you are offered, especially when you see that the list of available hotels is getting smaller, every day.
What’s the Best Area in Hannover to Book Your CeBIT hotel ?
If it is your first time in Hannover, the best thing is to choose a hotel next to the main train station. That way, you will not have to waste time the first day, figuring how to get to the exhibition halls. Waiting for taxis in hotels that are far away can take long, and if you take public transportation, and you have to change train or bus, it can be confusing if you miss the stop where you were supposed to get down. There are direct trains from the station to the exhibition grounds, where they end, so it’s not possible to miss the stop.
Now, if you’re going to Hannover as an exhibitor, things change. Most exhibitors prefer a hotel near the exhibition grounds, so they can save travel time. Some, even rent a house for a week, to store display material, and put up staff, at an affordable cost. The Radisson Blue hotel, is located right on the exhibition grounds, but it is very difficult to get a booking there, even if you try to do it many months in advance. You might consider staying in the Laatzen area, which is right next to the CeBIT grounds.
Tips to Get a Great Hotel in Hannover
- Book early, and check the offers online, every week, because prices fluctuate a lot. If you don’t see anything with a reasonable price, look at Google Maps, and find other hotels in the city center. Then, phone them. There are some excellent hotels that don’t like to advertise online for this specific week.
- Go for three, four, or five star hotels (if you can afford them), and then check out the latest comments on Tripadvisor
- Choose a hotel near the main train station if your attending CeBIT as a visitor, or near the exhibition halls if you are exhibiting, or working in the booths.
- Make sure that their wireless internet works well
- Phone the hotel after reserving, and again the morning (or the day before) you arrive
Overbooking: Personal Experiences
Again, one wouldn’t think this would happen in Germany. I phoned up the hotel the morning I was supposed to leave. The person of the reservation department at the hotel confirmed that everything was O.K. and that the room was ready. Then, when I arrive late at night, they tell me there is a problem with my room. In one case they put me up in another hotel, which was a short walk from the original one I had booked. The next year the same thing happened with another hotel, and they put me in a room without a toilet!!! Both issues were sorted out the next day, but it still surprises me when they do such things. Let’s see what happens for CeBIT 2015 😀 . Update: It was a great experience at the Intercity Hotel. Counting the days till CeBIT 2016…..
Best Hannover Hotels Near the Train Station
Andor Hotel Plaza: Three star hotel, that is located right across the train station. I stayed there the first time I went to CeBIT.
Intercityhotel Hannover: Four star hotel, near the main shopping street of Hannover. There is a “Subway” sandwich shop right across. :p
Grand Hotel Mussmann: Four star hotel in front of the station entrance. Location is great, and you can’t get lost.
Loccumer Hof is also located within walking distance to the station. This hotel has different types of rooms, and some of them are based on exotic African and Asian themes.
These two hotels are in the area (about a 15 minute walk to the main train station), or less than ten minutes to the Steintor station, from which you can take a direct train to the exhibition.
Vek Business Hotel: Three star, but being very new make it look like a 4 star. Staff was polite, and helpful, when I went to inquire about prices, so I can say it’s on my CeBIT hotel list.
Mercure Hotel Hannover Mitte: This is also in the center of Hannover. Remember not to confuse it with the other two Mercure hotels, that are far from the main train station.
